Prioritize Yourself on Election Night

In a first piece published on Medium, I explore the concept of NOT engaging with the news on election night… if you dare.

I still haven’t nailed down my election night plans. However, I know I want to prioritize my mental health in this bulldozer of a year. As with every night of the last eight months, I can say with certainty we will be home. It will be my husband, myself, our four children, three chickens, one dog, and one bearded dragon. That sounds chaotic enough.

I also know that, unlike my friend, we will follow the results. However, in contrast to any previous election, I do not plan on watching election night coverage with fanfare, texting friends frantically, and scanning social media. I think I will brew a nice cuppa and maybe make some cookies. Perhaps draw a bath, light some candles, and wrap myself in a cocoon of comfort. My dog, clueless to everything, might get the benefit of an extra-long, chilly walk with his person.
